During 18 years SSC FSUGE Yuzhmorgeologiya (now JSC Yuzhmorgeologiya) has been carrying out the systematic integrated geological and geophysical survey to study the crusts’ mineralization of the Magellan Mountains, having performed a number of cruises on RV Gelendzhik.

One of the main types of work is geological sampling of the accumulation of cobalt-bearing manganese crusts (CMC) with the rock dredges and the drilling the shallow wells. The latter method has now been mastered as a working one and has proven itself at a high level, the number of drilled wells on the underwater structures of the Magellan Mountains exceeds 200.

The advantages of the drilling over dredging are:

  • the possibility of sampling the solid armored crusts of the summit plateau and subhorizontal surfaces of the axial regions and saddles;
  • Indicating the full capacity of crusts in situ, study of their section, structural features and composition;
  • Providing accurate coordinate referencing of drilled wells.

Using the drilling, the following scientific problems are solved:

  1. The spatial variability of the structure and thickness of crusts has been studied. It is established that it is small on the summit surfaces along the direction of the isobath, and it increases substantially across the slope, that is due to the dropout of certain layers from the section;
  2. The wide development of the nodules’ horizons buried in the coccolit-foraminiferous limestones on the guyots has been revealed. The latter are represented by samples of a predominantly spherical morphotype with fractions ranging from 1-2 to 6 to 8 cm. The biostratigraphic studies have shown that such horizons predominantly belong to the Early Middle Eocene, but Paleocene formations of this kind are also indicated;
  3. The correct choice of the optimal parameters of the exploration grid based on the results of the drilling, that is very important for the calculation of reserves in C1 and C2 categories, providing subsequently the reserves of an industrial enterprise for a standard term.

Until now, during the prospecting and evaluation stage, the engineering and technical support of the work was carried out by the deepwater drilling rig GBU-1/4000 (Figure 1) by the State scientific-production enterprise "Sevmorgeo" design.

In connection with the increase in the scale of ongoing CMC research, to ensure further exploration, a drilling rig will be required with the following features:

  • lack of batteries limiting the independence of the device’s performance;
  • the ability for stable landing and the increased maximum allowable list / trim for the working position;
  • the presence of several core barrels to save the ship's time during round-trip operations

In 2017,  JSC "Yuzhmorgeologiya" signed a one-year contract with HYKO LLC (St. Petersburg) for the design and development of a drilling rig that meets the above requirements, received MGBU-K abbreviation , the deep-sea cassette-type drilling rig.

HYKO is engaged in the design and development of deep-sea equipment in Russia. The main idea is using equipment with hydropower [1] and telemetry [2] at large depths. The use of these systems has been tested and approved by enterprises of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation. These unified home-made systems are already used in geological testing with devices such as Hayward grab bucket (DG-1), hexalobed TV-grab (GK-6T), drill carriage (UNPA GK-5000), and will be used in the design MGBU-K [ 3]. The approbation of the hydropower and telemetry on the existing systems leads us to conclusion that their use for pilot mining is justified. Thus, the power of one hydroelectric drive is 11 kW, but the machine in the parallel connection is able to gain the required power of 22, 33 or 44 kW or more.

Undoubtedly, the main criteria for the MGBU-K drilling rig being developed to enhance geological results are:

  • power supply onboard to exclude the stay period limit of the vehicle under water when choosing the place of machine unit fit, the operation of lighting devices, video- and photocameras;
  • the hydraulic remote control of each support, taking apart, will allow the machine to be placed on the slopes with a steepness of up to 15 degrees, followed by its alignment parallel to the seabed;
  • using the cassette-type machine for obtaining four cores in one depth cycle, with a factor of 0.4 for recalculation of savings in ship time.

It is important note that at the Conference, the HYKO’s specialists will be ready to show the operability of the machine units over the Internet in online mode, and it is planned to conduct field trials using MGBU-K already during the forthcoming cruise for CMC .

In addition to the study of the existing and production units under development at the world-class market, HYKO, together with the St. Petersburg State University, conducts research work on a topic: "Development of the structural schemes and substantiation of the capture parameters for the vacuum production unit for the mineral resources’ recovery at depths up to 5000 m. " Such professional experience is very useful in the design and construction in the near future of the production unit for the recovery of oceanic ores, both in the Magellan mountains area and in the Clarion-Clipperton ore province.

The geological materials obtained under the state contracts № 29/01/101-8, № 45/01/101-14 were used in the work.

Develop a domestic picking robot "S-ROB"

The Russian company GIKO in 2021 began to develop a domestic picking robot "S-ROB", which has positive buoyancy without load and can work at depths of up to 5000 m. For this purpose, the concept "SWARM" was developed, the purpose of which is to provide:

  • extraction of ferromanganese nodules with a productivity comparable to traditional methods;
  • non-invasive impact on the environment;
  • maximum redundancy (reliability).

A site in the Pacific Ocean was selected.
The cable clamp is mounted.
MGBU-K was connected to the fiber-optic umbilical.
The functioning of all working systems, nodes and blocks was checked.
The MGBU-K was launched to a depth of 1700 m.
Three drilling stations have been completed.
Based on the results of the experimental and methodological work, the MGBU-K drilling rig has shown its suitability for carrying out geological exploration work on the ocean floor.

This telecontrolled uninhabited underwater vehicle is a universal tool for working the heavy class at great depths. Multitasking is provided by a unified hydraulic system, interface and manipulator. Maneuverability allows with ease and strategic accuracy to occupy an advantageous position for working under water.

We participated in the development and testing of guidelines for the use of deep-water devices to enhance the efficiency of exploration work on the results of sea trials, for:

Sea trials of deep-water installations and systems were carried out in the course of 38 flight RV "Professor Logatchev" in the Baltic Sea in the Kaliningrad abeam (100-150 miles from the coastline) at a depth in the area of work does not exceed 100-120 m. The bottom in the operation area of plains with relative slope less than 10 degrees. Among the bottom sediments encountered sands, but most of the bottom of the sea is covered with deposits of clay silt green, black or brown glacial origin.
